Major freshwater research and management opportunities with AI – Learnings from our Webinar with David Hamilton and Ajmal Mian

In our recent webinar, we explored a range of topics, starting with strategies to reduce data churn and optimize investments in remote sensing technology, and evolving to discussions on self-driving cars and AI hallucinations!

David Hamilton is the Director and Professor in the Australian Rivers Institute, Griffith University. He has held positions in Environmental Engineering at the University of Western Australia and Biological Sciences at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. In recent years he has been closely involved in management and policy implementation for freshwater ecosystems, holding appointments with the Ministry for the Environment (NZ) and advisory roles for regional councils and industry groups in New Zealand and Australia.

Ajmal Mian, is a Professor of Computer Science at The University of Western Australia. He is known for his research in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Robotics. Ajmal has published over 300 scientific papers in high ranked AI journals and conferences, and he is the recipient of three prestigious and competitive fellowships from the Australian Research Council (ARC)

During the webinar, we delved into how recent advances in AI tools can be leveraged to integrate diverse data sources for water catchment management. The goal is to minimize data churn and ensure that all stakeholders have improved access to technical, scientific, and socio-ecological information. Many registrants asked insightful questions about maximizing the benefits of AI, highlighting that we are just beginning to explore its full potential.
