Case Study – Gippsland Water – Automated water quality monitoring

Quick Facts

Client: Gippsland Water
Location: Hayfield, Victoria
Product: AquaArmour evaporation and algal control system, Solinst Eureka Manta water quality meter and DataStream for real time data management.
Services: Field installation of a water quality monitoring system; including booming, Aqua Armour modules and telemetered water quality monitoring. Project Management and rental of environmental monitoring equipment.

Our Client

Gippsland Water is a regional water corporation responsible for delivering drinking water, managing wastewater, and overseeing nvironmental stewardship across Gippsland, Victoria. The Heyfield Water Treatment Dam is a key component of their East Gippsland operations and an important part of the local water treatment network.

The Issue

Gippsland Water required additional Aqua Armour modules for deployment at their Heyfield storage pond (approximately 2,800 m²). They also sought the potential for booming installation to secure the modules if needed in the future. Additionally they were wanting real-time water quality data, including water level, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity.

The Solution

HydroTerra provided a comprehensive solution to address Gippsland Water’s requirements:

  • Aqua Armour Deployment: Modules were installed at Heyfield to prevent and reduce algal growth in the water treatment pond.
  • Booming Installation: Booming was installed in 20 m × 20 m cells to prevent Aqua Armour modules from moving during strong winds.
  • Telemetered Water Quality Monitoring: Ongoing monitoring was implemented to measure potential fluctuations in water quality, including temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and chlorophyll. Data are transmitted to the DataStream platform to support improved water storage management at Heyfield.
  • Project Management & Data Management: HydroTerra managed the full scope of project planning, site assembly, deployment, and setup of the DataStream platform, ensuring client personnel were trained in system use and monitoring protocols.

Installation Details

  • Module Assembly & Supply: Modules were fabricated and shipped to the site, then assembled on-site.
  • Site Installation: HydroTerra conducted deployment, commissioning, and testing of the 1,500 modules. Installation of the DataStream telemetry system was completed concurrently.
  • Training: Gippsland Water personnel were trained in DataStream operation, including dashboards, alarms, and data download.
  • Timeline: Module installation was estimated to take three weeks with two technicians, plus approximately two days of project management support.

The Results

  • Reduced algal growth at Heyfield pond
  • Modules remain secured during strong winds
  • Real-time water quality monitoring enables better water storage management
  • DataStream provides ongoing visualization, alarms, and reporting
