HydroTerra provides industry focused training to build hands on skills in groundwater monitoring and environmental data collection. Our programs combine online learning, practical workshops, short sessions, and tailored training to meet the needs of individuals and organisations.
Courses
We offer two established courses designed to equip participants with essential groundwater monitoring skills.
HYDROTERRA’s GROUNDWATER SAMPLING COURSE
The HydroTerra Groundwater Sampling Course equips participants with the essential knowledge and hands-on experience to collect representative groundwater samples effectively. It is suitable for field technicians sampling for the first time, as well as experienced practitioners who want to refine their methods and improve sampling quality. This course can also be tailored for teams who wish to optimize site-specific groundwater monitoring programs.
Course Structure
This course is a two-part course where participants can choose to complete just Part 1, or both Part 1 and Part 2 for a full practical experience.
Part 1: Online theory module
• Self-paced online learning, including field videos, quizzes, and a live webinar
• Covers sampling principles, equipment, QA/QC procedures, and regulatory requirements
Part 2: Practical field workshop
• Hands-on training applying the skills learned in Part 1
• Run at HydroTerra’s, or customised on-site using your bores
• Includes discussion on optimising sampling techniques, testing different equipment, and refining methods to collect the most representative groundwater samples.
Custom Workshops
HydroTerra can deliver on-site Part 2 workshops tailored to your monitoring network. We bring a variety of sampling equipment, discuss methods, and explore ways to enhance sample representativeness and quality.

COLLECT AND EVALUATE GROUNDWATER DATA (MSS025034)
HydroTerra delivers the Collect and Evaluate Groundwater Data course in partnership with the Australian Hydrographers Association (AHA). This nationally accredited unit of competency provides participants with the practical skills and technical knowledge required to collect, test, manage, and interpret groundwater data in line with industry standards and regulatory expectations.
The course is delivered fully online, allowing participants to complete the theory components at their own pace, supported by practical assessments that focus on real-world groundwater monitoring tasks. It is suitable for practitioners working in environmental monitoring, water resources, mining, landfills, and consulting.
Successful completion of this unit can also be used as credit toward the Diploma of Water Industry Operations (NWP50118) and other relevant VET qualifications.
Learning outcomes
By completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the characteristics of groundwater systems and interpret hydrogeological information
- Plan groundwater monitoring programs and manage metadata to ensure accurate and traceable data
- Establish and evaluate monitoring wells, applying safe and effective field practices
- Perform water level and water quality measurements, including sampling, following QA/QC procedures
- Operate and interpret data from continuous groundwater monitoring systems
Course content
The course covers:
- Introduction to groundwater systems
- Planning groundwater data collection and metadata management
- Establishing and assessing monitoring wells
- Manual measurement and continuous groundwater monitoring systems
- Processing, validating, and interpreting groundwater data
