HydroTerra was proud to contribute to CSIRO’s Autonomous Sensors Future Science Platform (AS FSP) via the Sensor Prototyping Hub (SPH) Technology Showcase, held 7–8 May at CSIRO Clayton. Representing industry, Richard Campbell shared practical insights on applying emerging sensing technologies in real-world environments.

The event marked five years of CSIRO’s work from 26 early-career scientists and engineers advancing autonomous environmental sensing.

At the heart of the initiative is CSIRO’s Sensor Prototyping Hub, designed to move ideas to field-ready solutions faster by:

Connecting CSIRO’s facilities into a unified network

Enabling rapid prototyping and testing

Integrating engineering expertise and infrastructure

Accelerating iteration, validation, and commercialisation

One of the presentations was the Mouse Surveillance case study, showcasing an autonomous platform that monitors activity in real time to inform more effective control strategies. Mouse Surveillance case study using an Autonomous Sensing Platform – Autonomous Sensors Future Science Platform

The system enables:

Continuous, automated detection

Earlier identification of population surges

Faster, better-informed field decisions

It’s a strong example of how rapidly prototyped sensing solutions can deliver real-world impact at scale.

As the third pillar of CSIRO’s Autonomous Sensors program, the Hub represents a shift toward faster, more collaborative innovation, bringing “Horizon 3” research out of the lab and into application.

For HydroTerra, this aligns closely with our mission: delivering monitoring solutions that are not just innovative but reliable, scalable and field-ready. Collaborations like this are critical to bridging research and industry and ensuring the next generation of sensing technology delivers real impact. We look forward to the future projects, technologies and innovations emerging from the Autonomous Sensors Future Science Platform and the engineering excellence it continues to drive.
