From coasts to deep oceans: Emerging technologies reshaping environmental monitoring

It was such a pleasure to have CSIRO’s senior research engineer, Andrew Filisetti and senior experimental scientis, Pat McMahon join our webinar series. Andrew and Pat shared how emerging technologies are improving the way environmental data is collected across marine and coastal environments. The session highlighted advances in autonomous platforms, environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling and ocean observing systems that make monitoring more efficient, scalable and cost-effective.

A key focus was the use of autonomous eDNA sampling systems, which enable large-scale biodiversity observations without requiring scientists onboard vessels. The presenters also demonstrated how autonomous marine vehicles can collect data in real time, adaptively target areas of interest and improve sampling efficiency.

The webinar concluded with an overview of the Argo ocean observing program, showcasing CSIRO’s efforts to enhance profiling float technology and increase the quantity and quality of ocean data available for climate and environmental research.
