Harmful Algal Blooms: A Global Crisis. How AquaWatch Australia is advancing measurement, monitoring, and early warning systems

Tim Malthus and Duy Nguyen from CSIRO presented an update on progress made by CSIRO’s AquaWatch project since their last presentation via this forum in April 2024, particularly in the area of integrated algal bloom monitoring and forecasting in inland waters.

Following a brief introduction to AquaWatch they discussed Australian examples of in situ sensing outputs based on individual AquaWatch pilot sites, dashboard development and an illustration of their satellite-based algal activity monitoring over wider scales. The talk was rounded off with a presentation of recent work on algal bloom forecasting incorporating both traditional modelling and data driven machine learning approaches.
