Future Forecasting: Building confidence in biosolids management

Biosolids play a vital role in Australia’s circular economy, providing a sustainable pathway for recycling nutrients and organic matter back into the environment. However, evolving community expectations, emerging contaminants, and changing regulatory requirements are shaping the future of how biosolids are managed and reused.

In this webinar, we were joined by Hilary Hall from RMCG and explored the current state of biosolids production and beneficial uses across Australia, examining how management practices have evolved over time and what lessons can be learned from past successes and challenges. Participants gained a better understanding of the key drivers influencing the sector today, including environmental, regulatory, social, and economic considerations.

The session looked ahead and discussed how historical trends and current industry developments can be used to forecast the future of biosolids management in Australia.

We explored the opportunities and risks facing the sector, including the role of innovation, resource recovery, and the increasing need for transparent, science-based decision-making.

Drawing on international experience, the presentation examined emerging regulatory approaches being implemented across Europe, including initiatives designed to strengthen public confidence, manage contaminants of concern, and support sustainable reuse pathways. We considered how these approaches could be adapted to the Australian context to improve regulatory consistency, enhance stakeholder trust, and safeguard the long-term role of biosolids within a circular economy framework.
