Monitoring Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) sites is complex, with challenges ranging from technology reliability to data quality. To help practitioners navigate these issues, HydroTerra and the University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute are offering a short course on best practices and innovations in sampling, spot field measurements and real-time continuous monitoring.
Participants will explore the importance of monitoring key parameters across:

• Groundwater – including pH, electrical conductivity, oxidation-reduction potential, acidity, alkalinity, sulfate and heavy metals, alongside groundwater levels to identify potential seepage.
• Surface water – assessing water quality parameters as well as runoff and first flush/peak flow following rainfall events.
• Waste rock and tailings dam seepage points – understanding water quality, flow rates, metal loads and flow directions.

A major focus of the course is understanding the strengths and pitfalls of monitoring technologies – from samplers and portable meters to sensors and integrated monitoring systems. Participants will learn how to deploy and operate these tools effectively, including calibration, maintenance and QA/QC measures that ensure meaningful, accurate data.

The course also highlights how monitoring results can be translated into critical insights for site management and compliance assessment, providing participants with practical knowledge to apply in the field.
