From sensors to insights: How Oizom is helping Sydney to monitor urban air quality

How do you keep track of air quality in one of Australia’s busiest cities when extreme weather and urban activity can make accurate monitoring a challenge?

A local council in metropolitan Sydney faced exactly that challenge. As the city continues to grow, maintaining a clean and healthy atmosphere is increasingly important, but obtaining reliable air quality data in changing environmental conditions is not always straightforward.

To better understand local air quality and the impact of industrial activity, the council deployed four Oizom Dustroid Smart monitoring systems across the region. The stations were installed to continuously measure particulate matter concentrations, including PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅, alongside temperature and humidity.

The Dustroid Smart platform incorporates advanced features designed for long-term environmental monitoring, including humidity correction for particulate measurements, anti-static sampling inlets, remote calibration capability and automatic firmware updates. These features help ensure accurate and dependable data collection, even in challenging weather conditions.

By comparing daytime and nighttime monitoring results and analysing data through Oizom’s cloud-based platform, the council gained a clearer understanding of background air quality levels and potential exceedances linked to industrial activities. The system delivered real-time insights that supported informed decision-making and ongoing environmental management.

 

The Outcome

 

Access to reliable, real-time air quality data has enabled local authorities to better understand how industrial activity influences the urban environment and to develop targeted pollution mitigation strategies. The monitoring program also benefits the broader community by providing information that can help residents reduce their exposure to air pollution and make more informed decisions about their daily activities.
As cities continue to grow and environmental expectations increase, projects like this demonstrate the value of continuous, high-quality monitoring in supporting healthier, more sustainable communities.
