Proven in the field: The reliability of Solinst Eureka Manta water quality sondes
28 September 2026
For environmental monitoring programs, reliability is measured not just in specifications, but in years of dependable field performance. While many make claims about durability, few suppliers back those claims with an industry-leading three-year warranty. Every Solinst Eureka Manta sonde is supplied with a three-year factory warranty, reflecting the company’s confidence in the rugged design, anti-corrosive construction, anti-fouling features, and long-term serviceability of its instruments.

Solinst Eureka Manta sonde
At HydroTerra, we have seen this reliability demonstrated firsthand through a long-running coastal water quality monitoring program close to Melbourne. Since 2017, six Eureka Manta sondes have been deployed as part of the program, and all units purchased between 2017 and 2021 remain operational today, including an operational spare. These sondes continuously monitor water quality in challenging marine environments where conductivity regularly ranges from 30,000 to 50,000 µS/cm. Several sites are only accessible by kayak, making equipment reliability particularly important because routine maintenance can require significant effort and planning.
Operating in coastal waters presents a constant challenge from biofouling at this location. Algae growth, shell accumulation, sediment deposits, and periodic blue-green algal blooms can all affect sensor performance if not effectively managed. The Eureka Manta platform addresses these challenges with integrated wiper systems and copper anti-fouling protection, technologies specifically designed to reduce biological growth on sensor surfaces. The use of copper anti-fouling systems and wipers is supported by Solinst Eureka’s field-proven fouling management approach, helping to maintain data quality during long-term deployments. This monitoring program combines these built-in features with monthly cleaning and calibration, resulting in reliable operation across all monitoring locations.
Long service life is further supported by the maintainable design. Unlike many instruments that require complete sensor replacement, Manta sondes feature replaceable sensors and serviceable internal components. In our experience, the refillable pH reference electrode is particularly valuable, allowing electrolyte replacement and extending sensor life. While pH sensors in this application require monthly calibration to maintain accuracy, overall maintenance requirements have been manageable. HydroTerra routinely performs component replacements internally, including sensor and electronic board replacements, with only occasional complex repairs referred to the manufacturer. The optical dissolved oxygen sensor’s long-life replaceable cap and refillable pH sensor design also contribute to lower long-term ownership costs.
A key lesson from nearly a decade of operation is that longevity comes from a combination of robust instrument design and proactive maintenance. It is important to note that the extended operating life of these sondes does not imply that all original sensors remain in service. Rather, the ability to replace individual sensors and internal components has allowed the sondes themselves to continue delivering value year after year. Although repairs typically require workshop disassembly and are not particularly practical in the field, maintaining an operational spare has enabled rapid instrument swaps whenever servicing is required.
Today, the Manta sondes at this project close to Melbourne are integrated into HydroTerra’s DataStream™ telemetry stations, powered by solar panels with battery backup. Water quality measurements are recorded every 15 minutes, providing a continuous stream of environmental data that supports long-term management decisions. The Manta platform has certainly proved that reliability is more than a specification on a datasheet, it is something that has been earned through years of successful field deployment.
