Rising Stage Sampler – Reliable event-based sediment monitoring for remote waterways

The Rising Stage Sampler (RSS) is an automatic sediment sampling device designed to collect suspended sediment samples during rising stream flows. It is particularly well suited to flashy, intermittent waterways, where storm runoff and sediment transport occur over relatively short periods. The RSS is commonly deployed at remote monitoring locations that may only be visited occasionally by field personnel.

Rising Stage Sampler

Unlike powered automatic samplers, the RSS operates entirely through hydraulic principles. This makes it highly reliable in remote locations where mains power, solar power, or telemetry infrastructure may not be available.

How Does It Work?

The RSS is specifically designed to collect suspended sediment particles larger than approximately 62 microns. The sampler consists of collection bottles connected to a carefully engineered horizontal intake tube. The intake tube is installed with a slight downward inclination, helping to minimise sediment accumulation and reduce the likelihood of blockage.

As stream levels rise during a rainfall or runoff event:

  • Water reaches the intake opening.
  • Flow passes over the intake crown and enters the collection bottle.
  • The bottle fills progressively as water levels continue to rise.
  • Sampling automatically stops when the water level inside the bottle reaches the air exhaust tube.
  • An air lock forms, preventing further inflow and preserving the integrity of the collected sample.

Mounting angle assembly with 3 x 1L bottle configuration

This simple yet effective mechanism ensures that each bottle captures a discrete sample representative of a specific stage of the flow event.

Key Benefits

  • No Power Required
  • Low Operating Costs
  • Reliable Sample Integrity
  • Robust and Durable Construction
  • Proven Performance in Remote Monitoring Applications

Typical Applications

  • Mine site runoff monitoring
  • Tailings storage facility catchments
  • Agricultural drainage channels
  • Flood monitoring stations
  • River and creek health monitoring programs
  • Research catchments
  • Stormwater management studies

For organisations seeking regulatory compliance data or a better understanding of sediment transport during storm events, the RSS offers a practical, cost-effective alternative to complex automated pumping systems. Its passive operation, reliability, and low maintenance requirements make it an ideal solution for long-term monitoring in remote and challenging environments.
