The field trip to Salt Creek for the flow monitoring regatta
Troy Tompson and Lachie Ward attended the Australian Hydrographers Association (AHA) Technical Workshop in Victor Harbor, South Australia, joining hydrographers, water monitoring specialists, consultants, government agencies, and technology providers from across the country. The biennial workshop focuses on practical, hands-on learning and the exchange of ideas across the water monitoring industry.
A highlight of the event was the field trip to Salt Creek in the Coorong, where delegates participated in a flow monitoring regatta. The regatta provided a unique opportunity to compare a wide range of flow measurement technologies under real-world conditions, including drone boats, acoustic instruments, camera-based systems, and traditional gauging techniques. The collaborative format encouraged open discussion around equipment performance, data quality, and emerging approaches to hydrometric monitoring.
The workshop also featured presentations and demonstrations covering topics such as flood warning systems, water quality monitoring, hydrometric data collection, telemetry networks, and advances in environmental monitoring technology. It was a valuable opportunity to catch up with industry peers, explore new innovations, and gain insights into the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of water monitoring in Australia.
