Some things to consider before you start your next groundwater sampling project.

If you are taking on a new groundwater sampling project, here are some important things to consider before you start.
Being prepared before you head out to the site can save both time and money. A check list is essential for preventing potential issues.
Site Information
- Identify the site location and environmental conditions (e.g. urban, rural, industrial, remote, confined space).
- Determine the number of wells to be monitored.
- Specify the diameter of each well.
- Verify the presence of a monument or gatic cover.
- Assess if the site is prone to flooding or vandalism. Consider whether locked gates will require pre-arranged access. Evaluate potential concerns from livestock or wildlife.
- Gather any known data regarding the water quality, such as high salinity, acidity, leachate, or pollution.
Measurement parameters
Level Measurement
- Determine the required cable length.
- Identify the variation in water level over time.
- Establish the measurement accuracy required.
- Assess the need for a Barologger or a vented solution.
Water Quality Measurement
- Specify the parameters to be measured.
- Define the typical measurement range for each parameter.
- Determine the required accuracy for each parameter.
Improvements
- Consider whether the installation of a telemetered system will save time and money, particularly for ongoing projects.
