If you are taking on a new groundwater sampling project, here are some important things to consider before you start.

Being prepared before you head out to the site can save both time and money. A check list is essential for preventing potential issues.

 Site Information
  • Identify the site location and environmental conditions (e.g. urban, rural, industrial, remote, confined space).
  • Determine the number of wells to be monitored.
  • Specify the diameter of each well.
  • Verify the presence of a monument or gatic cover.
  • Assess if the site is prone to flooding or vandalism. Consider whether locked gates will require pre-arranged access. Evaluate potential concerns from livestock or wildlife.
  • Gather any known data regarding the water quality, such as high salinity, acidity, leachate, or pollution.
Measurement parameters
Level Measurement
  • Determine the required cable length.
  • Identify the variation in water level over time.
  • Establish the measurement accuracy required.
  • Assess the need for a Barologger or a vented solution.
Water Quality Measurement
  • Specify the parameters to be measured.
  • Define the typical measurement range for each parameter.
  • Determine the required accuracy for each parameter.
Improvements
  • Consider whether the installation of a telemetered system will save time and money, particularly for ongoing projects.
