Antimicrobial resistance – what are the key takeaways when it comes to managing this issue?
01 September 2025
We really enjoyed having Brent Davey from Fyfe join us to present on the emerging concern of antimicrobial resistance and the question, is our wastewater treatment enough?

It was a fantastic presentation, thank you Brent!
The key takeaways from this presentation.
Antibiotics save lives and extend lifespan, but overuse, misuse, and environmental spread are driving antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
AMR is a growing global threat — millions of deaths, huge healthcare costs, and loss of effective medical treatments predicted by 2050.
Causes include inappropriate prescriptions, incomplete treatments, and natural/environmental sources (soil, water, wastewater).
Soil and wastewater act as major reservoirs and spreaders of AMR genes.
Myths busted: AMR microbes can thrive without antibiotics; genes can transfer across species; DNA survives outside cells.
Action needed: strict hygiene in soil/wastewater work, better monitoring, and targeted regulations.
