Consumables – a critical part of water sampling

Consumables are not “accessories”, they are integral to data quality, compliance, and risk control. Across surface water, groundwater, and PFAS sampling programs, consumables directly influence whether results are defensible, repeatable, and regulator ready.

Consumables are critical, because:

1. Preventing cross contamination between sites and samples
The role of decontamination solutions, disposable tubing, bailers, gloves, and filters are essential in preventing cross contamination between sampling locations where:

• Multiple sites are sampled in one day
• Trace level analytes (e.g. PFAS, metals, hydrocarbons, eDNA) are involved
• Regulatory scrutiny is high

Without appropriate consumables, contamination risk increases and can invalidate entire sampling events.

2. Ensuring data quality and representativeness
SOPs for surface and groundwater sampling emphasise correctness and reliability of testing in accordance with standards and QA/QC programs.

Consumables play a direct role in this by:

• Maintaining chemical compatibility with target analytes
• Avoiding adsorption or leaching from containers, tubing, or filters
• Supporting stable field conditions during low flow and surface water sampling

Tubing and compatible pump consumables are required to achieve representative samples under field conditions.

3. Meeting regulatory and laboratory requirements

Sampling proposals and SOPs show that consumables are treated as a defined project component, not an afterthought.

This is because:

• Laboratories often specify container types, preservatives, and filtration requirements
• Incorrect consumables can lead to sample rejection on receipt
• Chain of custody and QA/QC requirements depend on correct sample handling materials

Consumables therefore directly support laboratory acceptance and regulatory compliance.

4. Supporting specialised applications (PFAS, eDNA, trace analysis)
Enterprise product documentation demonstrates that specialised applications rely heavily on single use or application specific consumables:

• Disposable inline eDNA filters designed to capture particulate matter and DNA without carryover.
• Application specific consumables listed explicitly in PFAS surface water sampling proposals.

In these contexts, reuse or substitution of consumables is not acceptable due to extreme sensitivity at low detection limits.

5. Maintaining field efficiency and safety
Consumables also underpin safe and efficient field operations, as reflected in SOP responsibilities around risk management and sample handling:

• Clean gloves and tubing reduce exposure risk
• Pre prepared consumables reduce handling time at site
• Single use items simplify logistics and minimise decontamination steps

This improves productivity while reducing the likelihood of procedural errors.

6. Standardisation and consistency across projects
The need to standardise consumables, documentation, SDS availability, and product selection across projects are essential.

Standardisation ensures:

• Consistent sampling outcomes across teams and regions
• Easier training and QA audits
• Reduced variability in field data due to material differences.
