Innovations in telemetry – the benefits of real time data

At HydroTerra we are continuously investigating ways to offer real time data for different applications. We recognise the enormous benefits of real-time data including immediate notification of significant events (e.g. flooding or water quality problems), quick detection of potential issues or failures and time and costs savings associated with not having to visit remote sites.

With this in mind, we are always seeking out ways to improve our telemetry offering. For example, a recent (and quite common) application is the use of telemetry devices under gatic covers in high traffic areas. This can present a number of challenges. Gatic covers are typically metal and can act as a faraday shield severely degrading signal reception and transmission. Pits under gatic covers are also prone to flooding and generally electrical equipment and water do not mix!

For telemetry under gatic covers, we now have a couple of fantastic options to overcome these challenges.  We have included a couple of IP68 rated telemetry devices in our range. IP68 rating means that the equipment can be submerged in water for a period of time without any ingress. Ideal for heavy rain events when there is a backup of water. To overcome the communication challenges, we have identified a gatic cover that is composed of hard plastic.

This is ideal as the communication signal is not degraded therefore allowing for devices to be deployed under the gatic cover and remaining operational. In addition, we have sourced some small external antennas that can be integrated into the covers themselves; the telemetry device is under the cover, but the antenna is exposed allowing for full communications.

We are also closely monitoring developments in satellite communications. Satellite has the benefit of very broad coverage but can also be expensive. However, we are working with our supplier, Myriota, who offer low cost, lost power satellite connectivity for IOT devices. This is based on a constellation of nanosatellites to receive data from ground-based sensors anywhere in the world. Ideal for applications with short messages (e.g. water level and temperature) and where 4G / 5G coverage is not available.
