If you enjoy a glass of Mount Langi Ghiran wine, there’s now even more happening behind the scenes to appreciate. HydroTerra has been working with the Victorian winery to enhance vineyard management and performance through improved monitoring and sustainable technology.
Mount Langi Ghiran uses three Sentek soil moisture probes to guide irrigation across their Shiraz vineyards, providing accurate, real-time insights into how water moves through the soil. These sensors help vineyard managers apply the right amount of water at the right time, from checking whether winter rainfall reaches the active root zone, to determining how long irrigation should run to replenish moisture at depth. They also support decision-making around root activity, reduce the risk of overwatering, and help assess salt leaching where water quality is a concern. With thoughtful placement, soil sensors become a powerful tool for improving irrigation scheduling and vine health.

The result? Healthier vines, improved irrigation efficiency, and consistently high-quality fruit for their celebrated Shiraz.
HydroTerra is now enhancing the system for Mount Langi Ghiran further by upgrading the monitoring units to solar power. This simple change eliminates battery replacements, reduces maintenance, and supports the winery’s sustainability goals.
It’s a great example of how smart monitoring and practical innovation can boost both vineyard performance and environmental outcomes and HydroTerra is proud to support the growers behind the wines we love. Cheers to that!
