Flux boxes are compact chamber systems placed directly on the surface of a landfill to measure the exchange of gases between waste and the atmosphere. By enclosing a known area, the box captures gases as they accumulate over a short period. The rise in concentration is recorded by an on-board analyser or collected in sample bags for laboratory testing, allowing specialists to calculate precise gas flux rates.

The primary targets are typically methane and carbon dioxide, the key greenhouse gases associated with landfill decomposition. Additional measurements—such as temperature, pressure and moisture—help build a more complete picture of site conditions and improve data accuracy.

Flux boxes are particularly valuable for high-precision, point-scale investigations. They excel at identifying emission “hotspots,” validating models, and supporting compliance spot checks where detailed, spatially resolved data is required. While they aren’t designed to provide whole-of-site, continuous emissions estimates (which are better suited to methods such as eddy covariance, tracer testing or long-term bore networks), they play an essential role in targeted surveys and investigative work.
