It was great to host our most recent webinar with Sanjeev Pandy and Gerhard Schoning from the Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment.

The session offered a rare opportunity to gain insight into a long-running, real-world example of an assessment of cumulative impacts from coal seam gas, petroleum and mining activities in Queensland’s Surat Basin and Bowen Basin.

Whether attendees worked in groundwater science, environmental management, regulation, or the resources sector, the webinar provided valuable lessons on transparency, independence, and adaptive management at scale.

In particular, the session explored:
• Why the framework was needed – the regulatory, environmental and community drivers behind its development
• How it worked – the core elements of the framework, including regional-scale modelling, monitoring and reporting
• What it achieved – measurable outcomes over more than a decade of operation
• Operational insights – practical lessons from implementing large-scale groundwater modelling and monitoring programs
• Challenges and learnings – key hurdles faced and how they were addressed

Participants learned how theory translated into practice — and what others could take away from 15 years of experience.
