Ecological rehabilitation of landfills using phytocapping
Presenters:
Landfills provide excellent opportunities for ecological rehabilitation as a high-value landfill afteruse option including habitat creation and enhancing ecological connectivity. As a co-benefit, they can be transformed into passive recreational spaces for the community.
We will explore current practices, opportunities, and challenges for the ecological rehabilitation of landfills, based on surveys conducted in Queensland. We will also discuss a GIS-based tool developed for identifying, evaluating, and prioritising a landfill portfolio for ecological rehabilitation.
Phytocapping with it’s relatively deeper unconsolidated soil layers, offers the greatest potential for ecological rehabilitation, but there are opportunities for all landfills to enhance ecological value and connectivity.
