HydroTerra was proud to lead the Groundwater sampling component of The Australian Hydrographers Association (AHA) water monitoring skill technical workshop that was held in Darwin on 16-19 September 2024.
Over the three days, the course covered:
- Groundwater 101
- Management considerations
- Why collections are made
- Measuring parameters to understand variable density in coastal groundwater and groundwater-surface water interactions
- Design of monitoring networks
- General groundwater level measurement and monitoring
- Groundwater sampling
- Contouring to understand groundwater flow directions
- How the data is used
Our Managing Director, Richard Campbell and Ture Carlson, one of our Senior Environmental Scientists headed to Darwin to conduct the training.
The field trip component was a huge hit, and it was really great to have Rob and Trev from the Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security participate in the day. They demonstrated their sampling procedure using their submersible pumping rig and downloaded the level data from the logger that was deployed in the demo bore. This showed everyone the seasonal fluctuation of the local groundwater.
Ture demonstrated low flow sampling using a bladder pump and flow cell, a technique used for contaminated land assessment rather than drinking water monitoring.
In the end, the students were able to learn about a few different sampling methodologies as well as ask some questions of some local professionals
HydroTerra run a regular Groundwater Sampling training course but also work with organisations and individuals to tailor training courses to their specific needs.
