Air pollution – The silent killer?

16 March 2023

Air pollution is harming us more than we know! Traffic pollution alone is suspected to have been responsible for over 11,000 premature deaths in Australia in a single year (Yu, 2023). This is caused from nitrogen dioxide being formed during the combustion process in vehicles, which can lead to, “illnesses including strokes, diabetes, asthma, lung cancer, premature birth and low birth weight,” (Yu, 2023).

Particulate matter is very small and can enter the bloodstream which can have detrimental effects on your internal organs – scary!

With little awareness around this issue, little is being done about it. Medical and scientific experts are urging for stronger regulations around fuel standards and emissions as well as turning towards electric vehicles to decrease the deaths traffic pollution will cause in the future.
