It’s easy to get drawn into the doom and gloom of news about the environment that abounds in the media. At HydroTerra we’re susceptible to this too, given our role is to solve (and ideally to prevent!) environmental problems. So, we have decided to reframe some of the “bad” news and to actively provide some “good” news stories for our newsletter each month. There’s always a silver lining…

Fossil fuel generation thwarted by renewables

Renewables met the rise in global demand for electricity during the first half of 2022, a report from a London-based energy think-tank, Ember, shows. The think tank found that an increase in solar, wind and hydroelectric power prevented a possible four per cent rise in fossil fuel generation and a resulting 230 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. That is the equivalent of taking more than 49 million petrol-powered cars off the road for a year.
