Thank you to everyone who joined our recent webinar.  Tim Malthus and Duy Nguyen from CSIRO highlighted the growing challenge of harmful algal blooms (HABs) and the innovative solutions being developed to address them.

Key takeaways from the webinar

Global Scale of the Problem: Harmful algal blooms are increasing worldwide, affecting over 100,000 lakes. Key drivers include nutrient enrichment, warming temperatures, and altered hydrology. These blooms disrupt ecosystems, cause fish kills, and lead to significant economic losses, estimated at billions annually.
Monitoring Challenges: Current monitoring efforts face limitations such as uneven coverage, inconsistent data standards, and difficulties in detecting and identifying bloom events. Remote sensing offers promise but comes with constraints like cloud cover and spectral ambiguity.
• AquaWatch Australia’s Approach: AquaWatch integrates in-situ sensors, satellite data, and advanced analytics to deliver real-time water quality insights. This “virtual constellation” combines ground-to-space data streams with AI-driven modelling to enable early warning systems and actionable forecasts for water managers.
• Innovative Tools: The HydraSpectra sensor provides high-frequency reflectance measurements to detect chlorophyll and other indicators of algal blooms. Combined with forecasting models and machine learning, these tools help predict bloom dynamics and support proactive management strategies.
• Future Directions: Knowledge-guided machine learning is being developed to scale forecasting capabilities across regions and improve accuracy, even in ungauged locations. This hybrid approach blends physics-based models with data-driven insights for robust water quality predictions.

Why It Matters
Harmful algal blooms pose a serious threat to ecosystems, water security, and public health. By combining cutting-edge technology with collaborative science, AquaWatch Australia is paving the way for smarter monitoring and forecasting solutions.
