In this webinar, you will learn about the various aspects of environmental monitoring and public health that are conducted by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria, a science-based regulator that protects the environment and human health in the state of Victoria, Australia. You will also hear about some of the innovative projects and initiatives that the EPA is involved in, as well as some of the fascinating case studies that illustrate the importance of science for environmental and public health protection.
What you will learn:
- EPA Victoria’s Science – what we do and why
- How the EPA monitors and measures different environmental factors, such as air, odour, noise, land, groundwater, waste, emerging contaminants and water, and how this data informs regulatory decisions and actions.
- Some of the examples of the EPA’s projects and initiatives, such as Beach Report and Yarra River Watch, which provide real-time information on water quality and recreational suitability; Garden-Safe, which offers in-house soil contaminant analysis for residents; Air Watch, which provides state-wide, real-time air quality monitoring; and our new Psychological Health assessment tool, which will capture and assess mental health and wellbeing impacts associated with environmental issues.
- Some of the case studies that demonstrate the relevance and impact of environmental science, such as the use of lead isotopes to trace the sources and pathways of lead exposure in humans, animals and food products; the detection and assessment of new pollutants, such as PFAS and microplastics, and their potential health and environmental effects.
