Case Study – Ballarat Regional Landfill – Lysimeter Telemetry System

The City of Ballarat looks after many different areas, programs and projects for the community. An environmentally sustainable Ballarat is a key priority for the City of Ballarat and its community. This uniquely places the City of Ballarat to exert influence that delivers against the shared aspiration for a sustainable future and to bring together information from a wide range of sources to measure the environmental performance of the municipality.

To provide technical assistance for the troubleshooting and repair of two Lysimeters on site. To implement real time monitoring of the Lysimeters and weather stations data for compliance monitoring. The Lysimeter’s data was restored and routed into DataStream for future landfill data management, all historical data was restored.

• Inspect all equipment on site (weather station, soil moisture probes, data loggers, tipping bucket rain gauges, etc) and its wiring, to access damage and ability to repair;
• Connect SIM card to Lysimeters GSM communication hub to check and update parameters;
• Download and back up all data in data loggers’ local memory;
• Update firmware of the AML (Advanced Multi-Function Logger) and VSL’s (Voltage Sensor Logger);
• Carry put the required troubleshooting, repair and cleaning of equipment.
• Connect Lysimeter to serve DataStream Server.
• Integrate lysimeter to real time data management of Datastream.

Following these initial works, HydroTerra has maintained a strong relationship with Ballarat City Council and continues to provide expert advice and hands-on assistance with their monitoring system.
