Groundwater Awareness Week (GWAW) is taking place from March 5-11!

Water is one of, if not the most vital resource on the planet which supports life as we know it. Animals, plants, humans, and the entire ecosystem all depend on water for their continued existence and prosperity. As humans, we use water every single day for a vast array of reasons from drinking, cleaning, farming, etc. It is for these reasons that it is absolutely imperative that we establish a high level of appreciation and understanding for water, where it comes from, and why it is so crucial to us.

Only 3% of all the water on the planet is fresh and suitable for drinking, the top of which is groundwater. Groundwater is water that is situated deep underground in aquifers, a body of rock that holds water. Groundwater is the largest available fresh water source on Earth, making it of paramount importance.

National Groundwater Awareness Week is a time of the year that is set aside to advocate for the cleanliness and safety of groundwater. Even though we should not need reminding, GWAW serves a reminder as to the importance and vitality of groundwater to our very existence. It is therefore the goal of GWAW that we all take a moment to appreciate, understand, and learn the role that groundwater plays in our lives and to acknowledge the fact that its existence cannot be belittled.
