Landfill operators are the good guys!
20 July 2023HydroTerra is doing an increasing amount of monitoring work with landfills these days. They are an interesting and essential part of our waste management infrastructure. What was once a hole in the ground is these days a highly engineered structure with emissions collection systems and improved regulations driving improved practices to reduce pollution generation.
Landfill operators sometimes feel like the bad boys in the room, with the sector often the target for criticism from community, environment, policymakers and even the regulators themselves. This criticism stems from the assumption that there is a better way, and perhaps that somehow the landfills are the cause of the waste that we put in them! We ran a webinar on plastics in the ocean a few months ago. There was a statistic on the area of plastic suspended in the vortex in the ocean now being larger than Australia! Most of this plastic should have been destined for landfill. In the absence of cost-effective sustainable options for waste disposal, we must embrace and celebrate the work of our landfill operators.

Sparking particular interest for us and our landfill industry colleagues in recent times has been the significant changes to the regulatory landscape, as well as some game-changing technologies. Some of these advancements are already revolutionising how we monitor these sensitive sites, which have great potential in some regards (refer our recent The Biochar Opportunity webinar) but are also high risk in others.
The following three articles delve into key categories of landfill monitoring that HydroTerra advises on daily – leachate, dust and gas. We explore some of the cutting-edge technologies in the market as well as provide a salient reminder about why we need to monitor landfills in the first place.
