Make way with leadership, training, education & teamwork

The ability to communicate effectively what needs to be done (leadership), to share knowledge (training), build our collective wisdom (education) and work in more collaborative ways (team work) has never been more important than today. We are in turbulent, difficult times, but we are still making way. Of course, we all have a role to play.

It’s exciting to see leadership in action, the new Victorian EPA Act has redefined how we manage our interaction between industry and the environment. We are seeing change on the ground as a result. At HydroTerra, we help lead by sharing knowledge in how technology can be applied to improve operational efficiencies and reduce environmental impacts – the essence of the new Act.

We also play a broader role by sharing our expertise on technology and its application through newsletters, webinars and collaborative training with universities and industry. What has been so satisfying has been the amount of positive feedback we have had, particularly on our webinars, from individuals who want to present (share their knowledge) and the attendees who come to learn. Our most recent webinar had a record attendance, reflecting the interest in the topic (landfill management) and the reputation of the presenter Nick Simmons. We are very grateful to all our presenters and attendees for participating in these events. This month, we have more wisdom for you! Young stars of industry join HydroTerra

18 May 2022

As highlighted in previous newsletters, it is well recognised that there is currently a short fall in well trained young environmental scientists and engineers, in large part due to the pandemic. In playing our part to overcome this issue and as a way of practicing what we preach, HydroTerra has embarked on a substantial intern program, welcoming five new team members in the past few months to experience all aspects of our business. The energy and learning capacity of this team has been transformative and we are proud to introduce these young stars of the industry to you – two of whom are from the RMIT Capstone Project mentioned above.

Poppy Kelly

Spending time in nature camping with her family has fuelled Poppy’s life-long fascination with the environment and its conservation. Appropriately, Poppy is now completing a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science at RMIT University and comes to HydroTerra’s Internship program courtesy of the Capstone Project. Poppy is currently working in HydroTerra’s Rental Department and spends most of her “spare time” training and playing for the Richmond AFLW team.

Annabelle McPhail

After standing out as a passionate and energetic member of the RMIT University Capstone Project, Annabelle McPhail joined the HydroTerra Intern Program in April. Annabelle is currently completing her Bachelor of Environmental Engineering at RMIT University and is loving her work on the Yarra River monitoring project. Annabelle is focusing her energies for HydroTerra in the Rental and Marketing departments. She is interested in the environment and passionate about sustainability.

Will previously worked in HydroTerra’s Rental Department and is now enjoying spreading his learning as part of the Internship program. Will is currently studying a Bachelor of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at RMIT University. He is intrigued by physics, specifically energy and electricity, with a fascination in its generation and how it has become such an essential in life.

Jack Gleeson

Jack joined HydroTerra in 2021 in the Rentals Department and is taking the leap into the new HydroTerra Internship Program. Currently a third-year student in the four-year Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at RMIT University, Jack is interested in renewable energy systems and sustainable agriculture. He has completed work experience for an acoustic engineering company and worked on the Metro tunnel project for a civil engineering company for one year.

Lachie joined HydroTerra’s Rental Department in 2021. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Environmental Science at RMIT University and has a passion for sustainability in both Australia and overseas, especially in the energy sector.
