Measurement vs meaningful management
18 May 2023Reflecting on some of our recent world-class webinar presenters, it occurred to me that the purpose of our monitoring efforts – both of natural and industrial systems – is something that needs careful consideration…and the focus shouldn’t just be on compliance. Personally, I feel that our focus on compliance has to some degree reduced our capability to truly align measurement with meaningful management. We have some excellent applied research institutions in Australia that understand the complexities associated with matching measurements to outcomes through modelling. However, to really improve, we need to apply these understandings through industry standards and best practice guidance. Easier said than done! Undoubtedly, this requires heightened and continuous collaboration between these institutions and regulators. Only then, can the best innovations be put into practice in a timely way to optimise the protection of our environment. And that, surely, is the purpose of all our monitoring.
