Metrics matter for meticulous management
20 October 2022Well, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) got it right! It’s been very wet and the BOM said it would be. Early October forecasting for the month “La Niña, a negative Indian Ocean Dipole event, a positive phase of the Southern Annular Mode and warmer waters around Australia are all contributing to wetter outlooks over large parts of Australia”. The Bureau’s climate model uses the physics of our atmosphere, oceans, ice, and land surface combined with millions of observations from satellites and on land and sea to get it right. It really is impressive how much we now know and how well we can forecast. It does also highlight what is difficult to predict, those high intensity localised events that can cause so much devastation. Our thoughts are with the flood victims across the country.
Even with all that measurement and forecasting though, room remains for uncertainty, a level of investment risk taking and space for a “she’ll be right” attitude. For instance, despite the long-term projections of sea level rise, we still pay a premium for a seaside house even though the likelihood of it being inundated is going up!
A lot of what we do at HydroTerra is about matching management needs to monitoring requirements. We consult with our customers to tease out the metrics they most need. We’ve noticed the best managers know the metrics that provide them with the information they need to make the decisions to drive their businesses to be more productive and sustainable. This is when monitoring empowers change.
