Driven by data but face-to-face still a must
24 November 2022The sudden onset of the COVID-19 disrupted work patterns in companies worldwide. One of the work areas most affected has been employee training and development. The movement of employees to working from home has made it impossible to provide in-person skills training. This is being exacerbated by employee reluctance to now return to office based work environment. We seem to have settled into a work place attitude of what’s most comfortable for most is best! Personally, I think we will ultimately pay a high price for losing the continuity of work place face-to-face mentoring which has for many years provided the knowledge transfer from one generation to the next. But that’s just my take on it ?.
To gain insights into how some of our clients are dealing with meeting their increasing training requirements in our area of expertise – environmental monitoring – HydroTerra conducted a survey regarding the effects that the pandemic is having on employee training programs. While HydroTerra received survey responses from across a broad range of industry sectors, the majority of responses came from representatives of engineering consulting firms. Judging by the survey results (more than 60% responded as requiring support with training), the effects of the pandemic look to have been wide-ranging and long-lasting. This has created an increased demand for skills training. HydroTerra is looking to develop courses on line, blended with face-to-face for a range of environmental monitoring applications. This training will address both the burgeoning technology options and the more traditional field monitoring practices.
